I) Shit. quip quip 2003-12-03 12:11:12 crap, it's been a while since the last update. but a lot of stuff has been happening. the smoke and smoke practice spot was finished several months ago... i don't remember when exactly... and we've been working on a ton of new songs and shit. spencer and spencer rehearsal space spencer made it over to port angeles a couple weeks ago and got to check out the practice spot for the first time. he said he thought it looked bigger on the website than in real life... it was super awesome having him out here. ![]() anyway, this friday spencer is gonna be hangin in port angeles for a few weeks while we record the new/first album. recording the next few weeks we're gonna be recording a bunch of songs and hopefully have it released sometime early spring 2004. it hasn't been decided yet who is gonna release it... anyway, the songs are gonna be recorded at the smoke and smoke practice spot by all of us in the smokeySmoke. several test recording have already happened and the shit is sounding t i g h t ! or something. mp3 MP3s will probably/hopefully be posted online sometime in the couple weeks. tour an early spring tour is starting to be planned... no serious details just yet. if shit goes well, it'll coincide with the upcoming release. ha ha, i see that happening. later, d practice spot of confusion the straightener 2003-09-16 15:25:07 nice - the webcam is back! after many hours of hair pulling and teeth grinding, the shit is working (knock on wood) just fine. too bad it was busted when all the action was going down . . . and of course when nothing is goin' on it works again... special thanks to pixelsurgeon for the link. the space that kneads your face 2003-09-15 21:23:53 the network card for the webcam computer has been messed up for the past few days... i've been trying to fix the problem, but haven't really figured it out yet. any wi-fi geeks out there? 2003-09-10 14:21:57 holy crap... last night (phase 2.1) kicked serious ass. the huge 16' x 8' wall received it's second layer of sheetrock and was hoisted into place. the two side walls got framed, got their external layers of sheetrock, and were lifted ever so gently to their appropriate settings. twelve new pics from last night's efforts have been posted (over to the left, dude), and a new quicktime vr has been added - illustrating the completion of this phase. phase 2.2 will commence sometime late afternoon, probably around 4:00 pacific if ya wanna catch it on the bitchin-radical webcam. -dan who gives a fuck about phase 2? 2003-09-09 15:14:29 YES... Phase 2 (TWO! ... TWO! ... TWO!) of the Practice Spot was launched last Sunday (Sept 07, 2003). The first wall was framed up with one layer of sheetrock added. Since this wall is gonna be about six inches away from the main garage wall, it had to be built flat on the floor so we can pile on the external layers of sheetrock. I explain this because a few emailed me to say that making a floor with sheetrock is not a wise idea... ha ha ha. Phase 2 will continue sometime this afternoon (Tuesday, Sept 09) - The first wall will get a second layer of sheetrock and then will be lifted into place. How we think we'll manage to lift a 16' X 8' wall layered with heavy-ass materials, i dunno. But i do know that it'll be done with great speed... cuz we're fast, and speedy, and shit... like a rabbit, to the max! After that the plan is to get at least the rest of the walls framed up and ready for sheetrockin' like dokken. New on the site: * a fuckin webCam! Yes, this is the gonna be the hottest multimedia extravaganza to ever hit the webernet! Celebrate with your friends in front of your browser, down a few Mountain Dews (or nice, hot cups of tea), and watch while we all make glorious internet history. * Current cover art was done by our old pal, Matthew Schuster. * New pictures have been added from last Sunday's work. * Quicktime VRs have been added to the site, documenting (rad 360-style) the amazing world of practice spot construction. And yes, a couple of em are really crappy... i know i know Last: Wanna thank TED for helping us with this shit. I think we'd be seriously fucked otherwise. If you wanna personally thank TED, you can do so using the contact page. I think it'll make him feel special if you do. // "It's kind of like a punk rock This Old House , or Trading Spaces , or whatever." - from chefmenteur.org // "Yeah, I know. Hopefully the music will be better than the name." - from rawk.org // "best....site....ever...." - from allnightmovers.com Thanks - dan wig out at 2003-08-29 16:18:44 phase 2 of the practice spot has been postponed again till next weekend, which is probably good cuz i have lots of repairs to make on some of my drums. the smoke and smoke practice spot is being built inside my garage. phase 1 was framing and sheetrocking new walls inside 60% of the garage (photos on the left), mostly cuz the existing walls are so fucked up and full of holes... the new walls are double-layered. phase 2, the most important of the phases, will be building an actual room inside the garage, taking up aprox 50% of the space. this room will have 2 layers of sheet rock on the inside and outside walls. if necessary, we will add more layers if neighbors get pissed or the cops show up... ![]() Adding Creativity To Your Work Place: A Lesson from Smokin’ Smoke 2003-08-29 15:47:38 One of the cool things about working with computers, as I do, is the amazing number of creative people you come across in your day. Just about everybody on my floor has a squeeze ball or a meditation toy or thick soled shoes to show their allegiance to the "mind", not just the "grind." Admittedly, I used to have a tough time with some of the ways people chose to express themselves, but ever since I took a creativity seminar, I’ve learned to grit my teeth and grin, because creativity in the work place is a vital part of innovation! Studies have shown that creative people are important in fields such as banking, human resources, and even other fields. So we try to nurture an environment that lets our "creatives" shine. For instance, granola bars are supplied free of charge. Instead of letting the creativity leak out by going to wasteful lunches, we have granola gatherings in the break room. Recently we hashed out a problem with the printer, which saved many person-hours. (How’d we do it? Turn it off, then turn it back on again! Creative!) So when I heard Dan, one of our team members, having a fifteen minute personal conversation about his new band, Smokin’ Smoke, I didn’t just send him to the Xerox room with a hundred page tabbed report like in the bad old days. Instead I called him on the carpet and asked him, "How can we leverage your knowledge capital? How can Smokin’ Smoke be an asset to this corporation?" I followed Dan out to the ciggy porch (another not-so-groovy nod to creativity) and instead of giving orders, I listened. Turns out Smokin’ Smoke is a little like a just-in-time management team. Dan and Mike had worked together before but they had gone on to other projects like the Dirty Knives and Enemy Mime. When it came time for them to work together again, they needed a catalyst, which they found in the singer, Spencer, who was formerly in the Murder City Devils and had worked with Mike on a project called Dead Low Tide. (Hey, don’t blame me if it sounds crazy!! I thought band names went over the top with Frankie Go To Hollywood, but I guess that’s why they call it creativity!). A catalyst, in the workplace, is someone who does not really perform a function for the team but who talks to the other people and makes sure they are on the same page and on point with the timeline and reports back up the structure. Having a catalyst made it possible for Dan and Mike to repurpose their skill sets to the task of delighting the customer, with the value-add of Spencer's own skills and experience! Kind of like Mick Jagger! Well, my favorite bands are Smashmouth and Sugar Ray, but I can tell without even hearing them that Smokin’ Smoke are just as creative as those two, they’ve got MTV clothes and moves, plus they have the advantage of having a small team that can adjust to contingencies on an as-needed basis. If they can leverage that strength/flexibility, I predict a big summer hit! I learned a lot about creativity from Smokin’ Smoke. And I’d like to think Smokin’ Smoke learned a little about creativity from me. Because, you see, I’m a catalyst too. So grab a granola, and create (but pass the soy milk, please)! -david rhoden |
